Welcome to my blog

Hi, welcome to the blog of Brian Walsh Photography. On this blog I hope to showcase some of my images and maybe try and explain what I was trying to capture with each image. Anyway, we'll see what happens....

So, my name is Brian as I'm sure you've gathered by now. I live in Waterford, which is a small city near the south east coast of the island of Ireland. I'm married to Paula and have two daughters Annabelle and Ruby. As I writing Annabelle is 2 and a half and Ruby is 1 and a bit! As you can imagine I have lots of images of them all. I'll be posting some images of them for sure.

Ok, a small bit about myself. I'm 37 years old and my full time work is as an engineer in a large multi-national corporation here in Waterford. Photography is currently my hobby but of course I would love to be able to "make a go of it" someday! I'm currently doing a 1 year City and Guilds course in photography to try and build a good understanding of the fundamentals. I find it very interesting and challenging to some of my pre-conceptions. More about that another time.

Here's my first image so...

This is my daughter Ruby on her first birthday a few weeks back. I just love the look on her face. She's a cautious child and no doubt thought this is the strangest meal they've given me yet!

This was shot with my Canon 400D with a 50mm F/1.8 lens. Only available light was used so ISO 800, aperture F/2.8 for nice backround blur to isolate the subject, 1/60 sec shutter for reasonably sharp image. I try and avoid on camera flash if at all possible. It is very artificial light and usually destroys a potentially good image. I've recently discovered a really great blog about off camera flash here, and hope to start experimenting along these lines soon.

Anyway, I might at some stage clean up the background by removing the distracting chair leg in Photoshop but for the moment I think it's a nice image and captures little Ruby's personality well.

Be back with more soon...
